Elafiti Islands Tour from Dubrovnik: Koločep, Lopud & Šipan Complete Guide
The Elafiti Islands are three car-free islands just off the coast of Dubrovnik. No tourist crowds, no cars, no noise — just clear water, old villages, and some of the best swimming spots in Croatia. Here's everything you need to know about visiting them.
What are the Elafiti Islands?
The Elafiti Islands (Elafitski otoci in Croatian) are an archipelago of 13 islands and islets northwest of Dubrovnik. Only three are inhabited: Koločep (the closest), Lopud (the most popular), and Šipan (the largest). Together they offer everything the Dubrovnik coast is known for — minus the crowds.
The islands are 7-17 km from Dubrovnik — between 15 and 40 minutes by speedboat. They're completely car-free. Locals get around on foot, by bicycle, or by small golf cart. The population of all three islands combined is under 1,000 people.
For visitors, the Elafiti Islands offer: the Blue Cave (on Koločep), Šunj Beach (on Lopud — one of the few sandy beaches near Dubrovnik), medieval churches, olive groves, and water so clear you can see the seabed from 5 metres up.
Koločep Island — Blue Cave & Green Caves
Distance from Dubrovnik: 7 km (15-20 min by speedboat)
Population: ~165 people
Must-see: Blue Cave (Modra Špilja), 3 Green Caves, dense pine and citrus forests
Koločep (also called Kalamota) is the closest Elafiti island and home to the famous Blue Cave (Modra Špilja). The island is just 2.35 km² but packed with natural beauty — sea caves, coves, a 15th-century monastery, and walking trails through subtropical vegetation.
The Blue Cave is on the eastern coast, accessible only by boat. This is where sunlight refracts through an underwater opening and fills the cave with luminous blue light. You swim inside — it's the main reason most tourists visit the Elafiti Islands.
The Green Caves are three smaller caves on the southern coast of Koločep. They're shallower and open to the sky in places, which creates an emerald green color in the water. Perfect for snorkeling — the water is 3-4 metres deep with excellent visibility.
Lopud Island — Šunj Beach & Mediterranean Village
Distance from Dubrovnik: 12 km (25-30 min by speedboat)
Population: ~220 people
Must-see: Šunj Beach (sandy!), Franciscan Monastery, palm-lined promenade
Lopud is the most "resort-like" of the three islands, but still completely car-free and uncommercial compared to mainland Dubrovnik. The main village has a beautiful waterfront promenade lined with palm trees, a few restaurants, and some of the best-preserved Renaissance architecture in Croatia.
The main attraction is Šunj Beach— a crescent-shaped sandy beach on the south side of the island. This is rare in Croatia where most beaches are pebble or rock. The sand is fine, the water is shallow for 50+ metres (perfect for children), and it's backed by pine trees for natural shade. A small beach bar serves drinks and snacks.
Getting from the village to Šunj Beach is a 15-minute walk through a forest path or a golf-cart ride. On our tour, we drop you directly at the beach by boat.
Šipan Island — Wine, Olives & Quiet Villages
Distance from Dubrovnik: 17 km (35-40 min by speedboat)
Population: ~400 people
Must-see:Šipanska Luka village, olive groves, old captain's houses, vineyards
Šipan is the largest Elafiti island (16 km²) and the least touristy. If Koločep is about caves and Lopud is about beaches, Šipan is about culture and landscape. Think old stone villages, working olive presses, vineyards that have been producing wine since the 15th century, and Dubrovnik Republic-era captain's houses.
The two main settlements — Šipanska Luka and Suđurađ — are connected by a road through olive groves. Suđurađ has a stunning Renaissance fortified palace. Šipanska Luka has a quiet harbour with a couple of konobas (traditional restaurants) serving fresh fish.
